Register for SFC Legal Workshops in London, Birmingham & Leeds

Sisters For Change is running a series of legal workshops for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BME) Violence Against Women (VAW) service providers, frontline support workers and organisations who support BME women in late November / early December 2017. The aim of the training is to enable BME VAW service providers and related organisations to use the law to challenge unlawful decision-making by local authorities, police, social services and local councils in relation to individual cases where a BME woman has been a victim of violence.

Each workshop runs for 2 days (attendance at both days is required) from 9am-5pm. The workshops will be held at three separate locations in England, on the following dates:

  • London: Thursday 30 November & Friday 1 December
  • Birmingham: Monday 4 December & Tuesday 5 December   
  • Leeds: Thursday 7 December & Friday 8 December  

The workshops are free to attend and each has a capacity of 20 places. Organisations can sign up for a maximum of two places per workshop.

The training will include sessions by experts on the following topics:

  • Overview of working intersectionally with BME women and girls experiencing violence
  • Outline of findings of SFC Report Unequal Regard, Unequal Protection: Public authority responses to violence against BME women in England
  • The domestic legal framework for the protection of human rights in the UK & case studies on VAW
  • International standards on VAW & case studies
  • Domestic violence and immigration rules
  • Trafficking / modern slavery
  • The Domestic Violence & Abuse Bill
